Bradford Exchange station pilot on the 20th July 1976 is 03162.

Locomotive History
03162 was built at Swindon works as D2162, entering traffic in September 1960, initially allocated to York MPD before quickly transferring to Gateshead. In February 1967 it transferred to Leeds Neville Hill and five years later in November 1972 to Bradford Hammerton Street. It gained its TOPS number in February 1974 and was transferred to East Anglia (Colchester) in January 1977. It stayed in East Anglia for five years before it transferred back to Gateshead with a three month stay at Lincoln on the way north. Its final home was Birkenhead and it transferred to Birkenhead Mollington Street MPD in June 1983 moving over to Birkenhead North when Mollington Street closed in November 1985. Along with 03073 and 03170 it was withdrawn from in May 1989 at Birkenhead and towed to Chester. In the October 1989 03162 was brought by Wirral Council and moved to the Llangollen Railway where it currently (April 2017) can be found.

Carnforth depot pilot on the 23rd July 1976 is Class 03 204bhp diesel mechanical shunter D2381 and is busy shunting A3 4472 Flying Scotsman around the shed yard.

Locomotive History
D2381 was built at Swindon Works and entered traffic in October 1961 and remained at Derby until withdrawn in June 1972. Following withdrawal it was sold for preservation and is still currently (January 2019) to be found at Carnforth.

Throughout the 1960’s Derby had around ten 204 bhp diesel mechanical shunters allocated, however although I was a frequent visitor to Derby from 1967 onwards I can not remember seeing any actually at work. At the beginning of 1970 the Derby allocation was down to eight with six Class 03 (2130, 2381/82/86/87/88) plus two Class 04 (2211 and 2258). The next to be condemned were the two Class 04’s in the summer of 1970 although Class 03 2383 arrived as a replacement. 2383 did not last long as it was withdrawn in April 1971, followed by 2381 (June 1972), 2388 (July 1972), 2130 (August 1972) and 2388 (December 1972). This was balanced by the transfer of 2397/99 to Derby in November 1972 so that by 1973 the fleet stabilised at three, 2386/97/99. This continued until March 1976 when 03386 was condemned, to be followed by the transfer in 1977 of 03397 and 03399 to Norwich and Colchester respectively.

Still in green livery ten years following the introduction of Rail Blue a rather shabby and rusty 08172 is Leeds parcels depot pilot, 24th July 1976.

Locomotive History
Originally 13240 it was built at Darlington Works and entered traffic in February 1956, allocated to York MPD. It became D3240 under the 1957 renumbering scheme and would spend the next sixteen years at York before transfer to Holbeck in November 1972. It became 08172 under the 1973 TOPS renumbering scheme and a couple of months after this photograph it would make its way to Derby Works for classified repair. It was outshopped from Derby in November 1976, however Holbeck were not allowed to keep its newly overhauled Class 08 for long as it was transferred to Healey Mills in March 1977. In March 1985 it was transferred to Barrow Hill from where it was withdrawn five months later in August 1985. It was broken up within three months at Doncaster Works during November 1985 and one wonders if it actually ever reached Barrow Hill.
