Class 502 Driving Motor Brake Second Open (DMBSO) M28364M forms the rear vehicle of a six car (2x three car sets) Merseyrail suburban service at Kirkdale, 3rd April 1980. M28364M was built by the London Midland and Scottish Railway for the Merseyrail Northern Line system (Liverpool Exchange – Southport/Ormskirk) at Derby works in 1941 and was withdrawn by the end of 1980.

One of my early photographs after my move from number taking to photography using a Hanimex Compact non SLR “point and shoot” camera with a 40mm lens of dubious quality around the edges of the frame. M29870M sits in the depot headshunt at Hall Road depot (between Liverpool and Southport) sometime in 1974.
Unit History
Driving Trailer Second Open (DTSO) M29870M was originally built as a Driving Trailer Composite Open (DTCO) and is one of 152 vehicles built between 1940 and 1943 by the London Midland and Scottish Railway. They were originally formed as thirty four three-car sets and twenty five two-car sets which could be coupled together to form 5-car sets for use on the busier services. A very modern design for the time, they were equipped with air-operated sliding doors. They became class 502 under British Railways. In 1978 replacement units (class 507) began to arrive and over the next two years the class 502 units were gradually withdrawn with the final class 502 service train running on the 1st September 1980,
