Taking a break after a spell of shunting is 12077, Swanwick, Midland Railway Centre, 17th March 2012.

Locomotive History
In 1945 the London Midland and Scottish Railway began building at Derby Works a batch of diesel electric 0-6-0 shunting engines. By the formation of British Railways on the 1st January 1948 fifteen had been completed and construction was continued by British Railways until 1952 when one hundred and six had been built. They were numbered 12033 – 12138 and were the forerunner of the class 08 design. They were later classified as class 11 and they remained in service until the late 1960’s/early 1970’s. 12077 was built at Derby in 1950 and was delivered new to Saltley MPD. This was followed by spells at Cricklewood (1956), Derby (1957), Saltley (1957), Tyseley (1964), Bescot (1965), Ryecroft (1966), Chester (1966), Longsight (1971) and Wigan Springs Branch (1971) from where it was withdrawn in October 1971. Following withdrawal it was sold for industrial use until purchased for preservation in 1978 and moved to the Midland Railway Centre.

Class 1200 1500v DC electric locomotives 1254 waits to depart Amsterdam Central with the empty stock of a “City Night Line” overnight sleeper train, 31st March 2012.

Locomotive History
The Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) Class 1200 1500v DC electric locomotives were designed by the American company Baldwin after the Second World War and were built in Holland by Werkspoor (Utrecht) between 1951 and 1953. The electrical parts were generally built by Heemaf (Hengelo) to a design by another American company Westinghouse. Certain of the electrical parts and the bogies were manufactured in the United States. Twenty five locomotives were built (1201 – 1225) and they remained in service until withdrawn in 1998. Following withdrawal five locomotives (1214/15/18/21/25) were bought by the freight operator ACTS and renumbered 1251 – 1255. In 2010 1251/52/54/55 were acquired by Euro-Express-Treincharter BV (EETC) for use as empty coaching stock pilots between Amsterdam Central and the Watergraafsmeer carriage sidings for the overnight sleeping car services connecting Amsterdam with Munich/Zurich and Warsaw/Minsk/Moscow. They are also used for occasional charter trains and empty stock trains to and from the EETC workshop in Rotterdam.

142065 arrives at Worksop with 2P67, 12:44 Sheffield – Lincoln, 10th March 2012.

Unit History
The class 142 (Pacer) was built by British Rail Engineering in Derby between 1985 and 1987. The train body is based on that of the Leyland National bus and amazingly, for what was a cheap and nasty stopgap, these units are still going strong after more than twenty five years service with no real sign of replacement. 142065 is from the second batch of forty six units and was built in 1986
