313029 stands in platform 8 at Kings Cross with a “stopper” to Welwyn Garden City which I will later board for a ride up to Alexandra Palace, 22nd February 2015.

Unit History
The class 313 electric multiple units were built by BREL at York works between February 1976 and April 1977 for the newly electrified Great Northern suburban services. Sixty four, three car sets were built and they were the first “second-generation” Electric Multiple Units to be constructed. Part of the London Underground system from Drayton Park to Moorgate was incorporated into the Great Northern suburban electrification scheme which required the inner suburban fleet to be capable of operating on both 25 KV overhead lines and for 750 volt DC third rail supplies. The class 313 fleet were also the first units in Britain to have Multi-Function couplers, which allow both physical coupling and also the connection of control electric and air supplies to be carried out without the need to leave the cab. Currently (March 2015) the class 313 fleet are the oldest Electric Multiple Units in daily service with forty four sets still operating the Great Northern Inner Suburban services approaching forty years after being introduced. Nineteen sets are currently operated by Southern on South Coast duties based on Brighton and one set is a Network Rail test unit for ERTMS signalling system testing.

313123 pauses at Alexandra Palace with a inner suburban service for Kings Cross, 22nd February 2015.

Unit History
The class 313 electric multiple units were built by BREL at York works between February 1976 and April 1977 for the newly electrified Great Northern suburban services. In the mid 1980’s class 313 units began operating the North London Line services and eventually twenty three sets were modified for these duties with additional dc shoegear on the outer bogies and renumbered 3131xx. When they were displaced from North London Line services nineteen sets transferred to Southern for South Coast duties based on Brighton, one set became a Network Rail test unit for ERTMS signalling system testing and three sets returned to Hornsey for Great Northern duties. 313123 is one of the three ex North London Line sets now operating on Great Northern duties.
