40168 is passing Dalmeny Signal Box and approaching the Forth Rail Bridge and with a northbound express, 1st September 1978.
Locomotive History
40168 was built by English Electric at their Vulcan Foundry works as D368 and entered traffic in December 1961. It was one of a batch of class 40’s (D358-D368) which would always be associated with Haymarket MPD, being used on passenger, parcels and express freight duties from Edinburgh to Newcastle, Carlisle, Inverness and Aberdeen. It would eventually be transferred away from Haymarket at the start of the 1980’s and would spend its final few years allocated to Longsight. 40168 would survive in traffic until November 1984 when it was withdrawn with a damaged engine. It would linger until July 1986 before finally being broken up at Crewe works.

Although my photography collection from the 1970’s is now around forty odd years old for the vast majority I can remember at least the day in question and for most I can remember actually taking the photograph. However I occasionally get a surprise and one of those happened a few days ago when my good friend and railway photographer Mr David Hayes decided to post to his Flickr site a 1978 photograph of myself taken at Kinghorn during our week long Freedom of Scotland Railrover tour of Scotland (see comment section below). Not only had I not seen the photograph before but the location completely foxed me as I could not remember ever visiting Kinghorn. To make matters worse I initially thought Kinghorn was on the Kyle branch and it was a couple of days before I realised it is actually in Fife, just to the north of the Forth railway bridge.
I was chatting to Dave a day or so ago and the visit to Kinghorn came up and I decided to check my records to see if I had taken anything myself during our visit and low and behold it turns out to my surprise I had. It is my last shot from that week’s tour of Scotland and Kinghorn must have been our last stop before making our way to Nottingham and home.
Eastfield allocated 47197 approaches Kinghorn with a southbound express, 1st September 1978. The railway here skirts the coast with the Firth of Forth on the right.
Locomotive History
47197 was built at Crewe Works and entered traffic as D1847 in June 1965. After forty years in traffic it was withdrawn in October 2005 and lingered for another two years before finally being broken up by TJ Thomson, Stockton during January 2008.

Denim rules OK. My great friend and fellow rail photographer Mr David Hayes recently posted a 1970’s photo of yours truly. So I thought I would repay the complement with this 1978 shot of Dave at Dalmeny during our week long “Freedom of Scotland” Railrover tour of Scotland, 1st September 1978.
