DB Schenker do not seem able to make up there minds as to the need for a class 08 for the yard pilot duties at Toton Down yard. In the last year or so the duty has been split between 08605 or when 08605 is periodically stored it is undertaken by a class 66 locomotive. At the moment 08605 is in favour and it is seen here in the early morning sunshine on the 29th September 2012.

Locomotive History
08605 was built at Derby works as D3772 and entered traffic in June 1959 allocated to Stockport Edgeley MPD. It remained a Manchester area engine transferring to Newton Heath in November 1965 and Longsight in July 1967 until transferred to Saltley in the mid 1970’s. This was followed by spells at Derby, York, Knottingley and Motherwell before being stored in July 2009. During repairs at Toton in the autumn of 2009 it has been fitted with remote control equipment enabling it to be driven remotely from the ground as indicated by the external control indications provided on the cab and bonnet ends. Since 2009 it has been in use at Toton, Cardiff and Bescot between periods in store.

The National Railway Museum pilot engine is 09017 and it is seen here inside the museum on the 28th September 2012.

Locomotive History
09017 was built at Horwich works as D4105 and though very similar to a class 08 shunting locomotive, the class 09 are re-geared to give a maximum top speed of 27.5 mph (44 km/h) at the expense of a lower tractive effort. Entering traffic in November 1961 it was originally allocated to Chester MPD however it was decided to concentrate the higher speed locomotives on the Southern Region where there higher speed would be useful in working between the intensive passenger service and D4105 transferred to Feltham in August 1968. This was followed by a long period allocated to Selhurst on the closure of Feltham in 1970. In 1987 09017 was transferred to Cardiff for use on the Severn Tunnel emergency train and to reflect its new use 09017 was renumbered into the departmental fleet as 97806. It remained on this duty for the next eleven years until returned to normal duties during 1998 and was renumbered back to 09017. It remained active in the Cardiff/Newport area until stored at Newport Docks in December 2008. It returned to traffic on the 7th May 2009 and remained in use until moved to Toton on the 2nd March 2010 where it was placed into store. Following its sale by DB Schenker in August 2011 it was transported to its new home, the National Railway Museum at York.
