Just fourteen miles off the coast of France the island of Jersey was of significant importance to Great Britain in any war with France. In 1778 the British Government decided to improve the islands defenses by constructing a series of small strong points at strategic points on the coast. Between 1779 and 1796 twenty two round towers were constructed to the same basic design. The towers are built from local granite and are round as this provides better protection to canon balls. They housed around sixty to seventy troops and were later fitted with a 12 pound canon on the roof. Eight further towers were built to a modified design between 1803 and 1837. None saw action against the French as the last attempt to capture the island was defeated at the Battle of Jersey in 1781. Some were used by the German occupation forces during World War Two. Seventeen of the twenty two original towers still survive and this one at Le Hocq, seen here on the 10th July 2018 was completed in 1781 just after the Battle of Jersey

Freightliner 66610 heads north up the Erewash Valley passing the site of Stapleford and Sandiacre station working 6H10, 09:57 Bletchley – Peak Forest stone empties, 3rd July 2018.

Some of my early railway memories are sitting on Stapleford and Sandiacre station on a Saturday morning in the mid 1960’s (aged around 9/10) having been allowed to “escape” from the weekly visit to my Grandparents who lived in Stapleford. The station closed on the 2nd January 1967 and little trace of the station is now to be seen.
