Gen Zia sacked his handpicked Prime Minister Muhammad Khan Junejo on 29 May 1988 and was himself blown up in mid-air on 17 August the same year. After his death the Supreme Court where Junejo's petition was pending was inclined to restore him. When the SC was about to announce the judgment, the protocol and security people were there in full strength to display their loyalty to the Prime Minister. But the judgment was to let the will of the people prevail in the elections announced, and the escort left leaving Junejo as a plain citizen. Later Gen Aslam Beg claimed he had sent the Law Minister Waseem Sajjad to convince the SC to change its mind. Sajjad denied the allegations, but then why did the escort leave. It shows how elsuive power can be in Islamabad.
