The capital of the Province of Upper Austria is situated astride the Danube. With a population of 190.000, Linz is Austria's third largest city and links the Mühlviertel region that stretches north to the Czech border with the rolling hills that extend to the Austrian Alps in the south.
In 2009, a trip to Linz will be especially rewarding because the city on the Danube will be serving as European Capital of Culture and showing off what makes this such a special place.
I live in the short distance of 40 kilometres from Linz and it is possible that you can find pics from this great event all over the year in my photostream.

Austria’s most excellent works of art will find themselves united in the country’s ‘capital for a year’, in the LENTOS Kunstmuseum from January to May 2009. More than 30 Austrian museums, renowned collections, galleries and private art collections from Vienna to Lake Constance will each contribute three works. Ranging across all styles and drawn from different centuries. The roughly one hundred samples will provide a panoramic overview of the manifold artistic treasures the country has produced throughout its history.
"Elf/Elf" von Gottfried Bechtold, 11 self-compressed cement Porsches are to admire in front of the Lentos Kunstmuseum. This is one of the three artworks that the Kunsthaus Bregenz (Exhibition centre for contemporary art) had sent to Linz.

Exhibition “The Fuhrer´s Capital of Culture”
Art and National Socialism in Linz and Upper Austria
Austria´s Anschluss made National Socialists power fantasies briefly focus on Linz, the European Capital of Culture 2009.
The provincial town where Adolf Hitler had spent part of his youth was to be made over into an industrial and cultural centre.
In 1939 the capital of the Reichsgau Oberdonau, the Nazi´s name for Upper Austria, was declared one of the five “Fuhrer cities” that were to serve as models for future National Socialist town planning.
The exhibition at the Schlossmuseum Linz takes as its theme National Socialist ideas of culture and lays bare its hidden facets by drawing attention to the gap that separated propaganda and reality.

“Coming and Going”: Welcome to Linz, the European Capital of Culture 2009 in 36 Languages
“Coming and Going” is a project by Linz09 that’s making a high-profile statement on 18 city limits signs along major thoroughfares in and out of Linz: they’re being augmented with the word “Linz” spelled out in all the alphabets used in this city.
The new signage not only exemplifies the diversity of cultures in Linz; it’s also a symbol of respect for the migrants living among us, men and women whose presence enriches the atmosphere of Linz and makes it a true Capital of Culture.
Here you can see "Linz" in Greek.
