Looking out across the Bryce Amphitheater on New Year's Day 2020. One could not have fortold the events of the coming year, the isolation, the social distancing, the uncertainty, the emotional strife, the political drama.
Were I to travel there again, this winter, I'm sure the sight would be similar, and there's some comfort in that. These formations have weathered far more tension, disruption and change than any one of us could know in 100 lifetimes.. Surviving change and being resilient is what has made these places so special...and, I think it is what makes individuals special too.

I was not thrilled about having this cluster of people setting up a bongo circle under the arch as I tried to get different perspectives of the view and the sky. But, then I decided to climb up the rock on the backside of the arch from the trail, and laying on my back captured this image handheld (so it's wide open and a bit grainy). In retrospect, the people in the image add a sense of scale and offer a better sense of the popularity of this destination.
The windows are some of the most accessible arches in the park and are a great spot for families and those with mobility issues to experience the uniqueness of these magnificent sandstone formations.

Spectacular hues and views abound at sunrise at the apex of the Pa Ka'oao Trail at Haleakala National Park on Maui. From this vantage, looking southeast across the cloud covered Maui Channel, you can see both the tallest mountain in the world (Mauna Kea) and the largest subaerial volcano in the world (Mauna Loa). Together, these two mountains make up much of the Big Island of Hawaii and are among the five volcanoes on the island that make up Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park.
While both Haleakala and Mauna Kea are considered dormant volcanoes, Mauna Loa is still one of the world's more active volcanoes. Though, in this serene scene, you would never get a sense of the violence these locations can unleash.

Who doesn't have hundreds of pictures of these in La Jolla?
Something about this one just worked for me. I like the fact that the lighter fur on the front have of the subject's body stood out, almost as if spotlighted. The sky is pretty overcast with marine layer, which is dull in color, but in monochrome it almost seems as though she has a ray of light on her.

The Colorado Plateau is full of wonderous sandstone geologic features, that range from bright cream to deep red hues. It is often referred to as a cold desert, because it experiences colder seasons than the Mojave and Sonoran deserts to the west.
Here in Zion National Park in the southwestern corner of Utah, where the canyon floor elevation is above 4,000', snow falls occasionally and the winter temperatures can be very cold. The Virgin River which cut this canyon over millennia does not freeze, so on a clear day after a snowfall it reflects the vibrant colors of the rock and deep blue skies, further highlighting the scant snow in the scene.
