A short series of some rural Iowa barns with quilt patterns. Most of these barn quilt patterns are made-up of solid colors and comprised of simple geometric shapes such as squares, rectangles and triangles.
Some old barns have advertisements, others have a block from a quilt pattern. Barn quilts are generally chosen from a family's own colorful quilt pattern that has been passed down through the years. Then the family's quilt pattern is turned into public art on their barn or other building and most have “names” for the pattern.
Quite a few of these barns are disappearing; barns have fallen down or are in severe disrepair. Fortunately, some barns have been maintained; many have been repainted or have new vinyl siding and the original quilt pattern remains.
