My Dad and I spent some time at Hartsholme Park, Lincoln, searching for plant galls. This gall had a bonus bee fly next to it - the fly was a bit cold so hung around long enough for me to get a few shots of it from different angles. This one was my favourite because it shows the underside - not something I've had a good look at before.
Bee fly, Bombylius major, and gall, Andricus lignicola, on oak, Quercus robur.
Handheld, natural light. Background colour is from the carpet of leaves on the woodland floor.

My parents have been visiting this week - giving me the chance to spend some time looking for plant galls with my Dad. This is one he spotted on alder at Banovallum House, Lincs. It's past its best, but I like the weird shapes anyway.
Handheld, natural light. Very gloomy.

The swellings - seen here at the base of the leaves - are caused by the larvae of a gall midge (Dasineura urticae).

On 27th July, Happibun and I joined my parents and other members of the British Plant Gall Society for a gall-hunting ramble in the Bardney Limewoods. The weather was blisteringly hot and so the shade of the wood was most welcome. Plenty of different galls were found - here are some on field maple caused by a mite.
