A fairly distinctive micro moth with its scorched looking markings. This one was spotted during BioBlitz 2009 at Banovallum House, Lincolnshire. I've also had it coming to light in my garden.
It is sometimes known as the Hook-marked Straw Moth and is fairly common throughout most of Britain, often in waste-ground and other places where its food plant, thistle, is found.
Wingspan: 15-24 mm.
Season: June through August

Not the most striking of moths, but this was a new garden record back in August.
I thought I'd better get round to uploading some moths from 2012 when I realised I hadn't shared many yet!

I visited Kirkby Moor last week with my parents and spent a lovely afternoon looking for plant galls and other things. I was checking out an oak tree for galls when I spotted a parasitic wasp on a leaf mine. This was fascinating to watch and I had a go at photographing the behaviour.
The larva is Tischeria ekebladella, a moth. I doubt I'll be able to put a name to the wasp, though (and I'm now regretting not taking the leaf home to have a go at raising the parasite for ID).

Reminds me of a ski jumper :-)
Head-on view is in previous post.
Larval food plant is sea lavender - but I don't have any of that in the garden, so popped the moth on ragwort where it nectared happily.
