Cape Nosappu (Nosappu-misaki) near Nemuro is the easternmost point of Hokkaido, and therefore the easternmost point of mainland Japan (consisting of the country's four major islands). The small lighthouse dates back to 1872.

From the cape, the Habomai Islands can be seen in the distance. These islands have been under Soviet/Russian administration since 1945, but are still claimed by Japan as part of the "Northern Territories".
