Yesterday (10 June 2021), there was an annular eclipse of the Sun over the North Pole. It could be seen as a partial eclipse from large parts of Europe, but not from Japan. However, the event reminded me of the annular eclipse in May 2012 that was visible from the Tokyo area. I observed it from Makuhari Messe, Chiba Prefecture, and took some shots with the PowerShot G12. Due to the limited tele range of 140 mm (full-frame equivalent), the ring appears quite small, but better than nothing...

Transit of Venus across the Sun in the morning of 6 June 2012 (Japanese time).

After the second shot, about 1.5 hours into the transit, clouds came in, which prevented further observation.

Venus transits are rare events. They occur in pairs 8 years apart, followed by a gap of alternating 105.5 and 121.5 years. Currently, we are in a 105.5-year gap, so we'll have to wait until 10-11 December 2117 for the next transit.
