Statue of John Franklin in Franklin Square, Hobart, Tasmania.
John Franklin served as Governor of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) from 1837 until 1843. He died in the "lost expedition" to the Canadian Arctic in 1847 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin%27s_lost_expedition). The inscription on the base of the statue by English poet Alfred Tennyson says: "Not here! The white north has thy bones; and thou, heroic sailor soul, art passing on thine happier voyage now, toward no earthly pole."
