Union Pacific's tri-weekly local service to New Iberia, Louisiana, out of Avondale, La, throttles up across the massive Berwick Bay bridge deep in South Louisiana. Former Missouri Pacific GP38-2 816 west, and 29 cars, are en-route to interchange with short line railroad Louisiana and Delta out at their New Iberia yard west of Jeanerette and Morgan City. The train is traversing the BNSF railroad's Lafayette subdivision on trackage rights that date back to the UP's acquisition of the Southern Pacific in the late 1990's. As a condition of the merger UP sold their former Southern Pacific mainline between Avondale Yard and Iowa Junction (Lacassine), Louisiana, to the BNSF railroad. This allowed the BN access into the greater New Orleans area to interchange traffic with eastern railroads. The Louisiana and Delta railroad receives their cars courtesy of these trackage rights in order to service their collected branch line network in the sugarcane country of south Louisiana. The L&D operates several former low-carload SP branches that spin off at various points from the main line between Vallier and Lafayette. Here at Berwick the SP crosses the Atchafalaya river basin as it nears the Gulf, formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico, on a massive lift span bridge. Barge traffic from inland Louisiana that is utilizing the river here causes frequent delays to rail traffic trying to cross the bridge. Case in point was today's LLD51S who experienced an hour delay waiting for the span to lower while 7 separate river barges made their way downstream. It made for a great twilight scene, however, as the 816 and its crew cruised west into the night towards New Iberia.
Thanks for looking!
