Adult male's broad black mask is bordered above by white, below by bright yellow throat and breast; under tail coverts yellow; upper parts dark olive. Female lacks black mask; face is olive, like crown, back, and wings, with whitish eye ring. Adults vary geographically in extent of yellow below, eastern birds generally showing less. Abundant; stays low in grassy fields, shrubs, marshes; often holds tail cocked like a wren. Nests on the ground.
