Three-year gull. Typical of three-year gulls, acquires a new plumage in each of the first three falls; summer plumage varies only slightly from winter. Adult has pale-grey mantle; white head and underparts; yellow bill with black sub-terminal ring; pale eyes, yellow legs; black primaries tipped with two white spots. Head streaked with brown in winter.

Medium grey above, with black cap and nape; paler below. Beak red, usually black-tipped. Head projects farther than in Arctic Tern. Shorter tail gives it a chunkier look. Juvenile's forehead is white, crown and nape blackish. All winter plumage have a dark shoulder bar. Most terns plunge-dive into the water after the prey as this one is just about to do.
