Orange-red bill, thinner than Caspian Tern. Adult shows white crown most of the time. In non-breeding adult and juvenile, black on nape does not usually extend to encompass eye.

Huge size and massive beak are distinctive. Adult has white head, black underparts, pale eye and pink legs. On Nantucket island, you can literally find hundreds of nests dispersed on shallow mounds among low-lying cedar trees.

Medium grey above, with black cap and nape; paler below. Beak red, usually black-tipped. Head projects farther than in Arctic Tern. Shorter tail gives it a chunkier look. Juvenile's forehead is white, crown and nape blackish. All winter plumage have a dark shoulder bar. Most terns plunge-dive into the water after the prey as this one is just about to do.
