User / Paul Anthony Moore / A detail from Auguste Rodin's sculpture 'The Burghers of Calais' outside Calais Town Hall, Calais, France
Paul Anthony Moore / 12,904 items
Alongside 'The Thinker', it is probably Rodin's most well-known sculpture. It commemorates an event that occurred during the Hundred Years' War (1337 to 1453) when Calais was under siege by the English for almost a year. Calais commissioned Rodin to create the sculpture in 1884 and he completed it in 1889.
