" The Longhunter", Image size 15 x 21 inches. This is an oil painting by New Market, Maryland artist Harry Richardson of the Frederick valley as it might have looked in 1748 when the village of Fredericktown was first settled on the banks of the Monocacy River.
On the bluff called High Knob, atop Gambrill Mountain in the Catoctin Mountains, is a solitary hunter with his long rifle and his faithful dog. These backwoodsmen hunted for a living. If you look closely at the painting, you can identify at least ten wild critters hidden in the trees and rocks, as well as the hidden profile of the head of a Native American.
Thanks to living history interpreter Raleigh Boaze, "Half-Scalp", of Rosemont, Maryland for posing for this painting.
Prints are available. Approx. matted and framed size, 25 x 31 inches.
