It's always a real treat to see the Atlas Moths in the Butterfly House at London Zoo! They're amazing!

The Atlas Moth (Attacus atlas) is reputed to be the largest moth in the world in terms of wing surface area. They’re said to be named after either Atlas, the Titan of Greek Mythology who held up the Earth, or because of the map-like patterns on the wings. In Hong Kong the Atlas Moth is known as the ‘snake’s head moth’ because the wing tips are reminiscent of snakes!

I love the way the herons make themselves so at home in the penguin pool at London Zoo! I'd be disappointed if I visited the zoo and there wasn't at least one in there!

The Atlas Moth is the largest moth in the world on the basis of the surface area of its wings. It has poorly developed mouth parts, so never eats during its two week lifespan!

So during adulthood all they have to do is avoid predators, mate, and lay eggs to ensure that there will be a next generation of Atlas moths!

This wily old penguin looks like such a character!

At Colchester Zoo they feed the penguins indoors with people gathered round - no fences, gates, glass or bars, just a line the public are not allowed to cross! It's the closest I've ever been to a penguin, and it's an amazing experience!
