The abdomen of the Wheat Stem Borer (Cephus pygmeus) is long and thin and is black with narrow yellow bands. The wings are clear with a dark stigma.
This stem boring sawfly can be seen around fields where wheat is grown, and it
peaks in June and July. It is widespread, and thought to be fairly frequent in England and Wales.
The larvae bore into the stems of wheat and a few other cereals and grasses.

The Figwort Sawfly (Tenthredo scrophulariae) is apparently a common sawfly, but this is the first time I have knowingly seen one!
The Figwort Sawfly is an effective wasp mimic with black and yellow bands on tergites four to eight. The antennae are reddish-yellow along with subcosta and medius vein of the forewing. the larvae feed on figworts and mullein. It is found in England, Scotland, Wales, with most British records coming from England. Adults can be seen from June to August. The larvae are a dusty greyish white with black spots, and a generally creased appearance.
