This neat looking cottage with its picket fence caught my eye when we were walking through Burnham-On-Crouch yesterday!

NogBaad and I walked the rest of Canvey Island, as the next stage of our exploration of the River Thames/Thames Estuary, and on the way back to the car across the island we stopped off to have a look at the Dutch Cottage, which is now a museum.

Canvey Island was reclaimed by the Dutch who built the sea wall. It was drained and embanked by the Dutch engineer Cornelius Vermuyden in the 17th century. Numerous Dutch workers and their families settled on Canvey Island and they built rather unusual octagonal cottages of which a few still survive.

This cottage, built in 1618, is now run, on the Borough Council's behalf, by the Benfleet and District Historical Society as the Dutch Cottage Museum.

Given to the then Canvey Island Urban District Council in 1952, it was restored, repainted and had its conical roof re-thatched ready for opening as a museum in 1962.

This idyllic looking hairdressers caught my eye when we were walking the capital ring! It was tucked away down a lovely little cobbled street amongst all the busyness of Holland Park and just behind Kensington High Street!
