Dovercourt is a small seaside town in Essex, England. It is older than its smaller but better-known neighbour, the port of Harwich, and appears in the Domesday Book of 1086.

In 1863 Trinity House erected two cast iron lighthouses on the beach. They were used until 1917 to guide ships around Landguard Point; the two lights, the high light and the low light aligned were 'leading lights', indicating the right course. The lighthouses were restored in the 1980s, and are sometimes known as Dovercourt Range Lights.

Ducky and Welly were very excited to go on their first boat-trip today! They went to the Farne Islands and were lucky enough to be able to look round Longstone Lighthouse! (We enjoyed the trip too, especially seeing the seals!)

The first Orford Ness lighthouses, two timber towers, known as the ‘High’ and ‘Low’ lights, were established in 1637. Following constant coastal erosion they were replaced by brick towers in 1720, and in 1792 the present tower, the High light, was built much further from the sea. The Low light was abandoned to the sea in 1887. The current lighthouse itself is now in imminent danger of being washed away.

Lightvessels, or lightships date back more than 250 years and were in use all round the UK.
The LV18 was the last Trinity House working lightvessel until automation in 1994. LV18 still contains the original crew quarters, galley, messroom and six Gardner diesel generators to power the lantern, foghorns and ship's equipment. It is now berthed at Halfpenny Pier in Harwich and is open to the public as a museum lightship .
