Even though Aztecs lived mostly in the center of ancient Mexico (where Mexico City is now), they managed to get their hands on conch shells, which are usually found along the seashore. They not only make good musical instruments, they also give off an eerie sound, which goes well with the music played. This is also a frame capture from video, using the Canon PowerShot A1100 IS Digital Camera.

This is another frame capture from video, using the Canon PowerShot A1100 IS Digital Camera. This is from the first dance performed that night by Yankuititl, which I have the video of on YouTube. The kids didn't get to do much dancing until later, and that video will eventually be posted.

I like this image, as it suggests what one would see painted in an Aztec codex. I would have liked it better if the tall guy hadn't decided to sit in front of me. I say "audience friendly" because Yankuititl recreates the ritual dances of the Aztec empire, but they leave out the more unsavory aspects, which would be the sacrifice that accompanied most ritual dances. The lady on the left has the right idea of getting the children involved in the dancing. Later, I will post frame captures and video of some audience participation (also without the sacrifices).

Like many Native tribes and peoples, the Aztecs combined religion with their dance and music. As you will see in the video, the religious part of the music and dance was elaborate, and then they got into the dancing and music proper.
The video was shot on August 21, 2015.
