It's been over thirty years, so I don't recall everything, but I think this is either a partial cargo hold or part of where the crew would be working.

This was shot on film, Eastman Kodak Motion Picture Stock 5293 (tungsten), rated at ASA 250. I shot it on my Vivitar 400 S/L 35mm SLR, using a Vivitar 28mm lens, without a No. 85 filter.

I was invited by some colleagues in the County's Signal Hill office to come down to Long Beach for a ride on a tour boat that takes one around the harbor, mostly seeing the merchant ships, cranes and other elements that make up this industry. As our boat left the dock we were treated to this sight: the old Queen Mary, permanently docked and still operating as a hotel and giving tours. Maybe another day I will return for a walk on their decks again.

This ship (and the blue one like it) transport cars, which gives them the nickname "floating garages." This one hails from Germany, or maybe Toronto, or maybe even England.

There is something striking about these cranes that are truly impressive. Watch an old movie from the 1950s, like "On the Waterfront," and you see how shipping has changed in the last sixty-plus years. Operating one of these things must take a lot of intense training.

This is definitely the cargo hold. But I don't know what those red tanks are or what purpose they serve. I checked out other sites, including Wikipedia, but it didn't help in giving me that information. The hold's tail reminds me of the old "Time Tunnel" TV show. It also looks like a movie set with "forced perspective."
