That quote came from "The In-Laws," where Alan Arkin's dentist ends up helping his in-law, a CIA operative played by Peter Falk, and has his car inadvertently repainted to have flames on the side in the process. It was a spy movie played for laughs as a kind of borscht belt comedy.
This car, however, actually puts Arkin's car to shame. This is really nice looking, and the paint job is really beautiful.

I could be wrong, but I don't think this was a color used back in the 1950s. I do remember using a color like this when painting scale model cars when I was a kid. Or maybe they had Cadillacs this color out here in California and not where I grew up.

I don't think this was the car's original color. No one back then would have considered such a shade of blue (if using blue at all) for a car this make and model. But it looks pretty good here, especially in the late afternoon light.

This looks like a 1957 Chevy that's had its share of modifications. Was this car used for street racing, hence the lack of a front grill? Exposing the radiator this way probably helps to keep the engine cooler for such purposes. And look at the modified hood. Easier and faster air intake to the carburetor, is my guess. It almost looks as though it stepped off the screen from "American Graffiti," though many of the cars there that night also looked that way.

I don't know how many of these exist in southern California, but I don't think this one is exclusive. I could be wrong. But a few times I saw one with the same markings in the parking garage of USC Medical School. So either a teacher, or a student had a great sense of humor. Or maybe Herbie was actually attending medical school, who knows?
