Image Description: |
Stratford Square Mall came up on an instagram feed as its a shopping mall which is almost entirely vacant, but still open. Aparrently the current owner purchased the mall and movie theatre, then massively increased the rent. Businesses left in droves, it's now mostly empty. I'm not sure how or if Covid played into all this, but anyway, it has now been purchased by the local township and will shortly be demolished, a least partially. Turns out the mall was only 18 miles away, so we drove over to take a look and take some photos. The photos are of Stratford Mall, but they're probably familiar to anyone who has spent time in the US in the last 40+ years and visited a shopping mall. what is unique about this mall, is that parts of it (I think the roof) was designed by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. I can't remember the last time I bought anything from a shopping mall and I suspect the story of Stratford Mall will become increasingly familiar to malls across the country as mall shopping is consigned to the history books. |
