Former Lucky Store located at 2170 West Bayshore Rd. in Palo Alto,CA. The building is currently occupied by The Fresh Market. This was the only shopping center designed by Joseph Eichler who was known for his iconic mid-century homes. After Albertsons closed this store in 2007 many local residents were aware of the historical significance of the property which had become extremely dilapidated. After years of controversy over the proposed demolition of the shopping center a compromise was made to renovate the original sign and keep the old Lucky building standing. The old Lucky space was finally occupied once again this time by a new to California chain called The Fresh Market. They have done a REMARKABLE JOB renovating the building most notably by exposing the natural light from the large windows on the façade. In addition the interior has been made into a mini-museum with the walls covered in 1950s and 1960s photos of the surrounding Eichler neighborhood. There is one problem though, The Fresh Market IS NOT doing well in California as they have closed their Sacramento area stores many which had been open a mere 18 months. Hopefully this store will remain open for years to come as The Fresh Market has put a lot into renovating this historic property!
