A Pope's Pit Viper (Trimeresurus popeorum) from a 2016 trip to Thailand. Pit vipers are distinguished by the presence of twin heat-sensing pits located between the eye and the nostril on either side of the head. It's an extremely sensitive infrared-detecting organ, which in effect gives the snakes a 'sixth sense' to help them find and perhaps even judge the size of the small, warm-blooded prey on which they feed.

There are no vipers in Australia however they share similarities with the Australian Death Adder. Like death adders, vipers are ambush hunters laying in wait for an unsuspecting frog, bird, lizard or small mammal to enter within striking range.
