There are very few pythons in Australia that rival the beauty of the Centralian Carpet Python (Morelia bredli). They have been extremely high on my list to find and photograph in the wild, and like most of my big target species, I had to work for it. Following 7 nights of fruitless searching in March 2019, I returned to the MacDonnell Ranges in central Australia this November for another attempt. I got lucky on my second night when I found this beautiful 1.5m individual cruising around the base of a rocky escarpment not too long after sunset.
These stunning pythons attain and average total length of 2m and are predominantly nocturnal throughout the warmer months, which means scouring gorges and escarpments at night to be in with a chance of finding one. Because of their secretive habits and their small and remote distribution, they are seldom photographed in the wild. For me, it was definitely my best find of 2020!
