It was a bit difficult to drag myself up in the early morning, especially during the trip. But I did not want to miss any morning lights in a totally strange place. Here is another photo at the same morning as posted last one. The colors of sky and clouds changed rapidly in the early morning. The wind is omnipresent in the Magdalen Islands. Strong sea breezes have always been a part of the lives of their inhabitants.

A BIT OF HISTORY:

In 1534, Jacques Cartier was the first European to set foot on the islands, although the Mi'kmaqs had been going there for hundreds of years to hunt walrus. The archipelago was named in 1663 by François Doublet, then owner of the territory, in homage to his wife, Madeleine Fontaine. In 1765, the islands were inhabited by about twenty French-speaking Acadians and their families. Many of the Magdalen Islanders still fly the Acadian flag today.

The Magdalen Islands (also known as Les Îles de la Madeleine) are a relatively unknown destination in Canada but may well be one of the most breathtaking and surreal landscapes you can visit in the country. The small Quebec archipelago in the Gulf of the Saint Lawrence is so awe-inspiring that National Geographic just added the locale to its 25 Best Trips to Take in 2020.

Happy Friday and weekend my dear Flick friends! :))

This was from Madeleine Island. Until the 20th century, the islands were completely isolated during the winter since the pack ice made the trip to the mainland impassable by boat. The islands had no means of communication with the mainland. Here is the driving path: Ontario – Quebec – New Brunswick – Prince Edward Island – Madeleine Island. From PEI, took 5 hours ferry to Madeleine Island. There were about 400 cars on the ferry to the island, every car was fully packed inside, all the cars waiting in the line to get into the ferry, including the AV and RV. Whenever people opened the trunk, the stuff jumped out of the trunk… It made me feel there were lack of food and other things on the island…

Woke up every early morning for sunrise, from one island to another, all islands looked same to me, red rocks with birds, waves hitting the rocks… a bit cold in the windy early morning. The birds seemed enjoying the waves, the red rocks covered with birds’ poop… 😉 Let yourself be carried away by the gentle sea breeze in this magnificent open-air playground!

Walking along the coastline, looking like normal beach, but once you get into the deep inside, first the sandy beach, then the pebble beach, crossing the dunes, hiking up the woodlot, then you can explore the headlands, and enjoy amazing viewpoints on the cliffs.

On Boudreau Island, time stops. An hour seems like a minute, and a minute seems like an hour…

Boudreau is bursting with colors under the sun: full of yellow, red, blue, and green. The giant waves crashing against the cliffs. You can hear sweet natural melody - the pebbles being tossed around in the sea. The grasslands are perfect for soaking up the sun.

The Cape Lighthouse in L'Etang-du-Nord on Grindstone Island, in the Magdalen Islands, Quebec.

This lighthouse is a beautiful sunset spot and one of the most popular on the islands. It sits at the edge of a cape, hovering over red-sandstone cliffs and overlooking the Gulf of St-Lawrence. Arrived on time, the sky was dyed orange-red... Not just looking at the glorious sunset, also watching the waves and listening to the sea...

PS: The lighthouse was established on Point Hérissée in 1874, to warn mariners of Dead Man’s Island and mark the western shore of the Magdalen Islands. The current lighthouse was put in place in 1987. Made of fiberglass, the tapered circular tower with an octagonal metal lantern employs a dioptric light to send forth a light that can be seen for eighteen miles (24 km). Its current signature is a white flash every six seconds.

Cap-aux-Meules Island has three villages (Fatima, Cap-aux-Meules and L'Étang-du-Nord), it is more "urbanized" than the other islands and is the service and administrative centre for the archipelago. The name, Cap-aux-Meules (Grindstone Cape), comes from the presence of grindstone in the hill overlooking the port.

Hiking in Cap-Aux-Meules for a day along the coastline trail, the wind along beaches and capes and leads to an observation deck overlooking the port of Cap-aux-Meules. I was almost carried away by the gentle sea breeze in this magnificent open-air playground! The wind is omnipresent in the Magdalen Islands. Strong sea breezes have always been a part of the lives of their inhabitants. The sea breeze makes the archipelago the ideal place to enjoy wind sports and activities, like acrobatic kite flying and kitesurfing...

Fatima Exposed to northerly winds, the Fatima coastline is lined with spectacularly steep, jagged cliffs. Unfortunately, year after year, the coast is retreating as a result of erosion.
