Back so soon...well, I hadn't planned on coming back to Buffalo for awhile, let alone the same week but when a buddy of mine asked if I'd like to tag along for the day I couldn't turn the offer down. On a pristine Victoria Day weekend (for us Canucks atleast), we set out stateside to capture some of the endangered signals and whatever else the many railroads of Buffalo could throw our way. Here, CSX O032 is seen passing under New York Central sentinels at CP 431 in Depew, New York. Powered by a handsome EMD Mother/Slug set, this empty rail train would proceed to points west along the old Water Level Route.

After crossing over the NKP (NS Lake Erie District) at Blasdell, the Buffalo Southern charges west towards Eden with a small train in tow. This BSOR train is seen passing an ancient Erie searchlight, which once acted as an approach signal for the NKP/Erie diamond in town. However, today it watches trains pass at a much statelier pace than those of the once mighty Erie Railroad.

A Norfolk Southern local and the Buffalo Southern road job race alongside each other through the Tifft Street yards at a breakneck 10 MPH. I almost wish I had been shooting video as the yard was abuzz with action. If you look closely you can even see a pair of CSX GE's leading the eastbound auto rack train on the adjacent ex-NYC line.

Well, this isn't quite a Sugar Magnolia but as fans of classic rock would know, the Grateful Dead has a tune of the same name. For much of yesterday, the Grateful Dead served as the primary soundtrack to our cross-Western New York expedition. Having just come home from a few weeks in the States I didn't think I'd be returning for a while, however a good friend of mine invited down to Buffalo for the day and that all changed. With a pristine weather forecast and lots of action, I'm glad I took him up on the offer. Here, Norfolk Southern train no. 309 is seen making its way down the ex-Nickel Plate Road at Blasdell, New York amongst lush spring foliage.
