Beautiful morning sunlight illuminates the marshland at Falkenburg, Ont., as a trio of Canadian National EMDs charge Toronto to North Bay train no. 451 along the scenic, albeit often overlooked, Newmarket Subdivision. With tonnage for the ONR, trains 451/450 essentially serve as CN's connection to the North. Linking the big city with the far reaches of Ontario over a system that spans more than 650-miles from North Bay to as far north as Moosonee, west to Hearst, and east to Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, who knows where these cars will go from here! If one thing is for sure though, with the slightest hint of autumn in the air and the blackflies (mostly) at bay, you really can't beat a late summer's morning trackside in this neck of the woods.

The snow-caked face of Ontario Northland APCU 220 brings up the rear of a North Bay to Toronto "test train" as a pair of Canadian National SD70M-2s hustle train no. 451 through the woods at Falkenburg, Ontario. While 451 would make it to North Bay without a hitch, unfortunately, the test train would encounter a series of significant delays on both trips. Since the test train's fateful run nearly three months ago, radio silence has led some to wonder the legitimacy of the government's claims to re-instate this service. Time will tell.

Nestled amongst the rugged woodland of the Canadian shield near South River, Ont., an impressive trestle guides CN's Newmarket Subdivision high above Beaver Creek and the valley below. This scenic location had long evaded me until someone shared a video (www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbNA-J3NVTI) on FaceBook of "the last ore train" passing through here sometime in the early 1990s. In the video, a rock face overlooking the trestle is visible in the background. Naturally, this piqued my interest and lead to some exploring on Google Maps. Lo and behold, I discovered the location, albeit barely visible, on a fuzzy satellite image. As luck would have it, I came across CN's Toronto to North Bay train no. 451 during my recent travels across Northern Ontario. With 451 running only a couple of times a week, and even fewer in decent light, photo opportunities are few and far between at this location. Having followed 451 up from Washago, I parted ways with them around Novar as I was prepared to make the most of the opportunities that lie ahead. After trekking through the woods and ascending the rugged rock face, I am perched high atop a slab of billions-year old rock, as CN train no. 451 eases its way over the Beaver Creek trestle amongst a kaleidoscope of autumn colour. Another image checked off the list and vista conquered.
