Graflex Pacemaker Crown Graphic with Schneider Kreuznach 150mm f5.6 Symmar-S lens. Fuji Provia 100F positive "slide" film.

Exposure Details
Date: 20-04-2013
Time: 7:31am
Aperture: f22
Shutter: 1/4

Looks like I slightly overcooked this one. Slightly too much exposure for the highlights on the rocks. Either that or I slightly overdeveloped it since these are developed at home.

This is a family portrait of my daughter and son-in-law and their children. It was something we had all wanted to do but things get hectic in a big family so it was only the day before I left England that we were able to schedule it. Of course, that day decided to skunk my idea of an outdoor shoot by being overcast with dark clouds and rain. This was my "plan b" location in front of some large windows in the Milton Keynes Shopping Centre. No flashes with me so I sorta had to roll with the punches, so to speak.

I'm pretty pleased given the limitations imposed by the heavy overcast sky and windows stealing six stops of light from me versus what I would have had outdoors on a sunny day. I just had to tough it out at 1/15 at f5.6. That shutter speed is quite slow (to let in more light) so you will see a little movement blur on anyone who was moving. That aperture is also quite wide for a camera this big so anything closer to the camera or further back from it than Melissa's hands are somewhat out of focus. As I said, I'm pleased that I did all I could. With a family this beautiful you can't go far wrong.

Oh! Camera was my Crown Graphic. Film Fuji Astia 100F.

Graflex Pacemaker Crown Graphic 4x5 large format camera. Fuji Provia 100F positive colour reversal "slide" film.

Exposure Information
Date: 2013-05-25
Time: 21:00
Aperture: f11
Shutter: 8 minutes
Lens: Schneider Kreuznach Super Angulon 90mm f8
Field Notes: I was flying blind on this one. I didn't bring an exposure chart and for some reason was too stupid to use the exposure meter I had along with me. I blame that on the heat and humidity and the fact that I had been using the meter app on my iPod earlier when it was lighter. The result is that I guessed and I was about three or four stops under-exposed. Yikes!

In my vision for this shot this is pretty close to what I had pictured. However, if I had had enough exposure I would love to have been able to faintly show a bit of the dark interior ever so faintly in the shadows. On the other hand, a correct exposure would have been about an hour...

As a side note, this cave is truly in the middle of nowhere. And truly dark and probably very dangerous to be climbing about in at night. The summer heat and humidity were already present and much intensified in the cave. And .. and .. well, lets just say I wasn't alone in there and the other thing had wings and sounded pretty big. It didn't sound like a bat -- more like a huge flying insect. The things we do for art, eh?

Oh, almost forgot. I developed this one myself as well! At home. Agnew lab's new E6 line is fully functional!

Graflex Pacemaker Crown Graphic 4x5 large format camera. Fuji Provia 100F positive colour reversal "slide" film.

Exposure Information
Date: 2012-07-26
Time: 10:00
Aperture: f5.6
Shutter: 1/250
Lens: Schneider Kreuznach Symmar-S 150mm f5.6
Field Notes: This was shot wide open. Camera position had to be very low and focus and position were critical. I also had to wait for the right shaft of light to illuminate the background. It was hard to get low and check the camera properly as the ground was extremely soggy.

OK, OK. I really have to apologise. I felt I needed a properly scanned version of this (take it big and you will see) because the other one was done on my old HP scanner. However, I poured so much heart and soul into that version it has been a surprisingly huge effort matching it with the scan from the Epson. And, to be frank, it doesn't look all that different in the small size. I came very close to just replacing the picture on my last verion but since this is a different scan that just felt dishonest. So, sigh, here it is. If you've seen it before feel free to move along... At least this upload is accompanied by a brand new picture as well (Musfer Cave)...

Graflex Pacemaker Crown Graphic with Schneider Kreuznach Symmar-S 150mm f5.6 lens. Fujia Provia 100F positive slide film.

From a trip to the far north of Qatar with good friend and sometimes shooting companion, Kaushal.

I've posted some attempts at this one before but I think I was really being too timid until now. If the difference between the other versions and this one have you scratching your head allow me to point out what I think is better in this one:

1. You know where to look in this one. Your eye should be drawn to the centre of the "crown"
2. The rustiness and pointiness and general three dimensionality of the piece should be greater in this one
3. Not that you will notice in the small sizes but detail should be better across the board
