This was the last shot on the Grafmatic. I had an entirely different shot in my sites but the shifting light just wouldn't play ball and I had to abandon it. Moments later, however, this vista unfolded and I was able to pull off the shot in the 20 or 30 seconds that the light stuck around before moving on again. I do love the pictures provided by shifting light but it must be the most frustrating light to work with. Like The Gambler, you gotta know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em.

There’s a good portion of somebody’s suspension a little down and left of centre. I was imagining if you thought of the tyre tracks like animal tracks then the remains of a dead 4x4 would be like a bony carcass picked clean… Well, that’s where the title came from, anyway.

This is a somewhat recent shot. How surprising is that? It is also the first shot I'm posting taken using my new Grafmatic back that my wife kindly bought me for Christmas. For those who don't know this is a film back that holds six sheets of film and allows you to quickly cycle through them. Very cool.

This was taken the morning after nearly killing my truck on the way in. Ruptured oil line and brake lines. On top of that an almost sleepless cold damp night. I set out in low spirits but the unexpected sights that morning soon turned my mood around. This was shot number 5 out of 6 from the Grafmatic. Also my first time shooting the lovely Fuji Pro 160S emulsion in large format.

At the Richard Serra monument called East West in the Zekreet peninsula in western Qatar.

I had some plans for this full moon but it was a very hazy day. This meant that the full moon wasn't visible until it was fairly far risen (it's not visible until it climbs above the haze of dust and humidity). I also found myself in the wrong place.

I guess you could say that it was also the right place because a short sprint found me framing up a shot that I never planned but which seemed to present itself.

Mamiya M645 Pro. Fuji Reala iso100 negative film

I've shot long exposures on many films. Fuji Reala is not my go-to film for this sort of thing. But, as so often happens, it's what I had loaded. Since I was time limited and packing way too slow film I horrifically underexposed these.

This is from a previous trip to the dunes in November of 2014. I was astounded at the amount of animal life evidenced in this seemingly barren landscape by the covering of this dune wall with their tracks.

In processing I have fought and wrestled with this image. I didn't really want it to be black and white because it doesn't thereby really fit my "series" and anyway, the colour was good. However I tried, though, this image just demanded to be black and white.

There is an old quote from some famous photographer that goes something like, "When you photograph people in colour you capture their clothes. When you photograph people in black and white you capture their souls." Well, I'm a pretty colour-centric person but the subject here was the tracks and other textures on the dune and nothing in colour brings that out like the black and white version I hereby present to you...
