This gentle giant that took hundreds of years to reach its size, didn't have a chance a few years ago against the sandy soil, its weight in tons, and certainly a hurricane. But every time I see fallen trees in the forest, I know there is a purpose. I'm going to quote George Wuerthner from one of his biology articles: "Dead trees and down wood play an important role in ecosystems by providing wildlife habitat, cycling nutrients, aiding plant regeneration, decreasing erosion, and influencing drainage and soil moisture and carbon storage, among other values".
