The biggest of the 3 bitterns we have here and one that always flies high in the sky unlike the other two - yellow bittern and Cinnamon bittern - that fly close to the ground and above the reeds / paddyfields. These are also the most elusive of the 3 bitterns and shots are prized by bird photographers.
Measuring around 55-65 cms long, this is nearly twice the size of an yellow bittern (~30 cms) which is the smallest we have. The birds often can be confused for an Egret due to their size. Males are fully black on the back, while females are bit dark brownish and have thick streaks on the underside. The birds prefer very large reed beds for nesting and this is a big difference between the three.
Sighted this juvenile in a very large reed bed, it was disturbed by a Marsh Harrier that was hunting in the area - and it made several passes above the resting area of this Bittern, so for safety's sake it had to fly and moved to another patch of reeds some 500 m away.
Many thanks in advance for your views, faves and feedback. Much appreciated.
