My first shots of the Great Cormorant and first shot of any cormorant in flight. Was taken by surprise when this fellow took off from close but was quick to take some shots. This one was clicked just when the bird took a quick backward glance at me. This is a very common and widespread bird species. It feeds on the sea, in estuaries, and on freshwater lakes and rivers. Adults have white thigh patches in the breeding season as seen in this photo. The Great Cormorant can dive to considerable depths, but often feeds in shallow water. It frequently brings prey to the surface. A wide variety of fish are taken.

This cormorant was a long way from me, more than 100 meters away. But it came out pretty well. This is a very common and widespread bird species. It feeds on the sea, in estuaries, and on freshwater lakes and rivers. Northern birds migrate south and winter along any coast that is well-supplied with fish. Also known as the Black Cormorant in Australia and the Black Shag further south in New Zealand. It breeds in much of the Old World and the Atlantic coast of North America.

The Little Cormorant is a member of the cormorant family of seabirds. It breeds in tropical south Asia from southern Pakistan through India and Sri Lanka east to Indonesia. A common and widespread bird species. This is a small cormorant, 55 cm in length. Its rectangular head profile and short bill are distinctions from the somewhat larger Indian Cormorant. The Little Cormorant can dive to considerable depths, but usually feeds in shallow water. It frequently brings prey to the surface. A wide variety of fish are taken.

The commonest and smallest Cormorant. Their short, thick necks and head are distinctive. Breeding adults, as seen here, have blackish-blue sheen; silky white feathers on fore crown and sides of head; silvery-grey wash on upper back and wing coverts, speckled with black. They often dive not to be seen for many seconds, popping up far from where they dived. Consummate swimmers as can be judged by their webbed feet. They are often seen perched on poles, trees or rocks with their wings spread open to dry.

A pretty clear shot of this smallish, slender cormorant that has a triangular head profile as seen here. They are gregarious and often found in larger bodies of water and rivers where communal hunting could appear like a stampede. Sexes are similar, but non-breeding adults and juveniles are browner and lack the neck plumes. Similar in appearance to the Little Cormorant but distinguishable by its slender bill, more peaked appearance to its head, blue eyes and lack of the glossy black plumage of the smaller bird.
