At Jökulsárlón, ice breaks off the glacial tongue you can see on the left side and flows into this lagoon until it is washed out to sea. The ice is much more blue and stuck much more fast in December than it was in May.

The winds were vicious virtually the whole time I was in Iceland, which meant that I could do very little long exposure photography. This was one of the few calm days when I could take a longer exposure (this is 2 minutes). This was taken around noon while there was still a little pink left in the sky from the sunrise at 11am.

I have more images of Iceland in winter and, if you like, you can also take a look at all my Iceland images.

... and that makes a triptych from Jökulsárlón last month. I promise to move on to new subject matter now!

A last one from this beautiful spot.

This was taken my last morning in Hofn. When I woke up the skies were clear and I headed off early (well, in winter when the first tiny bit of light appears in the sky at 9:30am, early is around 9:00am) to return west to Jökulsárlón when I glanced in rear-view mirror and saw some interesting clouds sitting over Vestrahorn. Any photographer knows how agonizing that decision is - should I go back because when I get there the clouds may not look as interesting and I know I'll miss first light at the place I'm heading. I stopped twice in the middle of the road, trying to decide - luckily there's hardly any cars on the road in Iceland - and finally turned back. I'm SO glad I did.

I have more images of Iceland in winter and, if you like, you can also take a look at the pictures from my two trips to Iceland.

Vestrahorn is my favourite place in Iceland - it's probably one of the most lovely, dramatic landscapes I've ever visited. It's not nearly as popular or as well-known as places like Jökulsárlón or Skógafoss, so there's never anyone there (on my 5 or 6 visits, I've seen maybe 3 other people) and, for me, the solitude just adds to its beauty.
