Here's a last one from the ice cave. This one is from the back of the cave where the ice was the thickest and the light was the bluest.

Glacial ice caves form when rain and melt water carve a passage through the glacier to its mouth, usually in the summer months. In winter the caves formed by the water flow freeze and are safe to enter. Because the ice is so compacted, with almost no air bubbles, only blue light gets through, hence the gorgeous colours of the ice. At the back of the cave, where the ice was thickest, everything had an amazing blue colour cast.
This cave is in the Breiðamerkurjökul outlet glacier which is part of Vatnajokull (the largest ice cap in Europe) which covers 8% of Iceland.

An ice cave that I visited last week in Iceland.
Getting to the cave involved a walk over a dry riverbed and a hike up a glacier in crampons and into 20m/s to 30 m/s winds (45mph to 78mph) but, as you can see it was worth all that effort; it is simply one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen in my life.
All the black grit in the ice and on the snow is from the black sand beaches a few kilometers away.

I recently got back from one week in Iceland. In winter. Yes, it was dark (the sun rises at about 11am, sets at 3pm) and cold (though not as cold as it was in Toronto while I was away) and very, very windy... but... what an incredible adventure it was! And the light! Gorgeous soft light from about 10am to 4pm. A photographer's dream.
On the two clear nights I got, I hoped to see the Northern Lights, but the activity was so low that it could only be seen by the camera. Iceland has beautiful, dark skies for photographing at night, so here's an image of the Milky Way, with a little Aurora activity, over the Vatnajökull ice cap, near Jökulsárlón.
I'm still learning and practicing with night shots and I know that this would have been better if I'd done a second exposure of the foreground at a much lower ISO and for longer. As it was, the wind was so fierce I was holding onto the tripod to make sure it didn't blow over, so I didn't do that 2 minute exposure. Next time!

On my first day in Iceland (Christmas Eve) a huge storm blew in from the north. This is at an early/mid point of that storm and the image was taken 'early evening', which in December is about 2:30pm.
I have more images of Iceland in winter and, if you like, you can also take a look at all my Iceland images.
