One more from Abraham Lake.
The bubbles in the ice at Abraham are created by methane gas released by organic material at the bottom of the lake - it gets trapped in the ice as the ice freezes. You wouldn't be able to see the bubbles if the lake was covered in snow so part of what makes it a perfect place to photograph is the fierce wind that whistles across the lake almost constantly - both clearing the snow and polishing the ice. It was icy cold and windy the morning we were there, but worth it.

This was my third winter trip to Abraham Lake. The first year, it was covered with snow. The second year, there were no bubbles. This year I wasn't even going to go. I was going to concentrate on minimalist images on the Prairies, but Len convinced me to give it a try and this was the result.
There are thousands of Abraham Lake bubble shots out there, and I'm not usually one to shoot iconic scenes, but I loved taking these pictures: it's amazing being out there on the ice, incredible to see those bubbles and so much fun to try to find interesting compositions.

Another great leading line.
This was my second trip to Abraham Lake (and it's not just around the corner - there's the 4 hour flight to Edmonton and then the 4 hour drive to Abraham) in hopes of seeing bubbles in the ice. I was shut out last February with recent snowfall covering the ice but this time I did see at least some bubbles. It turns out, though, that it hasn't been a great year for them (yet?) and they're pretty hard to photograph (or at least I found them hard to photograph). The images I liked from the lake had almost no bubbles at all. Maybe one more trip is required? : )
If you'd like, take a look at my other pictures from the Rockies.

At Preacher's Point (where this was shot) there were these less-defined bubbles and I thought they made for a nice image.

This is one of my favourite images from the trip, I think. That sky was just so fantastic - I was hoping I was going to get one or two keepers from this spot.
This image is from a lovely week I spent in the Rockies (Banff and Jasper) with Jim Heny. If you'd like, take a look at the rest of the images from my 2015 trip to the Rockies.
