For the second year in a row (!!) my May storm chasing trip to the US Tornado Alley was cancelled. A ridge of high pressure (called a 'Death Ridge' by storm chasers - not because it is possibly deadly to people, but because it's deadly to supercell activity) sat across the US Midwest the week I was supposed to chase.
In an effort to make lemonade out of lemons, I kept my flights to Denver and went exploring in eastern Colorado and Kansas, photographing grain elevators. The shorted trip (just 6 days) turned out to be quite a good one and sure beat staying at home, doing nothing!

This trip to eastern Colorado and Kansas was a substitute (lemonade from lemons, if you will) for a storm chasing trip that same week that got cancelled. It turned out to be a lovely little trip. If you'd like to read about the trip and see some behind the scenes pics and video, take a look at my blog post about the Lemonade from Lemons tour. You can see all the images from the trip in my Colorado and Kansas album.

One of the things that appealed to me about photographing grain elevators in Colorado and Kansas was that many of them look very different to the ones I am used to in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. One of the most unique ones I saw was this isolated one in Goldenrod.

I love photographing power lines and these ones in Kansas were strung on these tall, elegant poles that had a rusted patina. My assumption is that they were designed to age this way, but I'm not sure. Either way, they were beautiful to me.

I stumbled across this elevator complex (there's another storage area behind me) on the way from one scouted site to another. There was no name on the elevator and no indication of a town name nearby. That night, I searched the map for a name, but there was nothing: it seemed to be just a stop on the railway line.

Many of the elevators you see in Kansas are new (or new-ish) concrete ones, but there are two beautiful, old elevators at Ardell, Kansas. I say 'at' because it doesn't seem there was ever a town here, just a railway stop. This one - the Gano elevator - was built in 1915.
This bright light is not my preferred light but when you're on the Lemonade from Lemons trip, you try to make the best of everything. I ended up liking this result.
