Tumpak Sewu, East Java.
Easily one of the prettiest waterfalls I have ever photographed.

Hiking to the top of Mount Ijen in Java one is keenly aware of the surrounding geothermal actiivity. A surreal experience where the hike up the steep slopes starts at 2 am. The smell of sulphuric fumes in the air and the gas mask bobbing up and down on your neck as you contemplate how far you can go before the fumes make it mandatory that you inhale through the mask. Fortunately the wind was blowing the fumes away from me and I made it to the top without having to use the mask. As the colors revealed themselves at sunrise the scene was a spectacular drama. The beauty of the lake contrasted with the pungent nature of the sulphur cloud. The rich colors contrasted by the dire conditions of the sulphur miners working below. Many of them were not even wearing gas masks. Each person carrying a load of atleast 50 kgs, shoulders bent and clavicles deformed by the weight of their labor. The place is an amalgam of beauty and hardship, a representation of life itself.

Tumpak Sewu waterfall, Indonesia
Imagine a place with so many waterfalls that they are too numerous to count. Wild flowers blooming in the cool mist in the company of lush ferns. Feels like you stepped into paradise. The only potential problem is keeping your lens and camera dry. Inspite of being covered with fine droplets of water my a7riii had no issues functioning well.
