"When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars which thou hast ordained; What is man that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man that thou visitest him?" Psalm viii. 3-4

Makes one feel rather insignificant, doesn't it?

Lots of the rock formations in the Alabama Hills spark the imagination and look like familiar objects or personalities. To me, this one looks like a dinosaur on its back.

But he's better-looking. Younger, too.

Land of extremes: Behind me as I shot this was Mt. Whitney, the highest elevation in the continental US, and just over those distant mountains was Death Valley, the lowest elevation in the Western hemisphere. Death Valley is also the location of the second highest temperature ever recorded in the world (134° F) and one of the driest spots as well, while the Sierra Madre range has so much water that its Eastern side is a major source of water for the city of Los Angeles, some 300 miles to the south.

That little piece of water on the right is part of Owens Lake, once a huge body of water, but now is mostly dry. The Alabama Hills on the valley floor were named after a Civil War ship owned by the South and are the sites of scenes from over 400 movies and TV shows.

One of my fondest memories from my youth, when we made frequent trips through the Owens Valley, on the way to my grandfather's cabin near Lake Crowley, was the Burma-Shave signs. I honestly don't remember what any of them said, but this one would have been appropriate, as there is a section of the road with many dips in it:

Don't / Try passing / On a slope / Unless you have / A periscope / Burma-Shave
