The ruin of one of the Third Welland Canal lift locks. The third of four canals built to accommodate the ever increasing tonnage and size of ships travelling around Niagara falls between Great Lakes Ontario and Erie, was completed in 1887. The canal remained in service until the completion of a fourth and much larger Welland Canal in 1932 which remains in service today.

The third canal system no longer depended on a feeder canal for its source of water. Water was directly supplied from lake Erie via the canal itself. It was 4.3 meters deep, with 26 stone locks, 13.7 meters in width, and 82.3 meters between lock gates.

Much of the canal has been filled in to make way for other projects and the locks barricaded off from the general public. They have become interesting examples of the gradual and inexorable assault by Mother Nature on the abandoned works of man as she takes back control of the landscape
