One day I walked up this street thinking happily of the future,
For God allows what does not exist to be strongly illuminated
Today, going down this street, I don't think happily of the past.
If I think at all, I don't think
I have the impression that the two figures met in the street, neither then nor now,
But right here, without time disturbing the meeting.

I found this poem by Álvaro de Campos, an alter ego of Fernando Pessoa, in a book I am reading "Lisboa nos passos de Pessoa" (=Lisbon through Fernando Pessoa steps"). I am glad to share it with my friends that love Lisboa. Fernando Pessoa loved Lisboa and Chiado as well, and his work witnesses it. He was born at no.4, at Largo de São Carlos at 3:20 in the afternoon of 13th June, 1888.
