Uno (Bijagós). One of the first photographs I made when I arrived. A beautiful environment, but so much Isolation and poverty had a strong impact on me.

I saw this tree when I first put my foot on the island of Uno. It was love at first sight. I was told later that it was a sacred tree. More recently, thanks to Andreas Martin, my contact on Flickr, who has also visited Guiné-Bissau, I learnt that the name of this tree is Poilão (Kapok tree?, the scientific name is Ceiba Pentranda) and that the name of the fruit of this tree is "Cabaceira". I remember now being given one of those fruits to taste and found it delicious. Children were eating this fruit and manga everywhere...
